Full-Time GIS Mapping Technician

Beaver Creek Archaeology, Inc., a cultural resource management (CRM) consultancy with offices in Bismarck, ND and Artesia, NM, is seeking a talented individual to join our team as a Full-Time Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Mapping Technician. BCA conducts project work throughout the central-western United States, with a significant focus on the Great Plains region. The primary role is to support archaeological fieldwork and research through the creation, management, and analysis of spatial data using GIS technology.

Position Overview
This position is based out of our Bismarck, ND office. The successful candidate will work 40 hours a week during regular business hours (Central Time Zone) with the possibility for overtime. Compensation will be commensurate with the applicant’s level of education and previous experience. Upon the completion of a probationary period, candidates will be eligible to enroll in our benefits package.

A GIS Mapping Technician plays a vital role in supporting archaeological research, site management, and regulatory compliance through the use of GIS technology, ultimately contributing to the preservation and interpretation of cultural heritage.

Key duties and responsibilities

  • Map Production: Produce high-quality maps and graphics for reports, publications, and presentations, incorporating GIS data and analysis results
  • Data Processing: Assist in processing GIS data, ensuring data integrity, organization, and accessibility for project teams
  • GIS Support: Provide in-office GIS support for fieldwork activities, including mapping and site documentation.
  • Quality Control: Ensure the accuracy and completeness of GIS data and maps through thorough quality control checks
  • Collaboration: Work closely with archaeologists, project managers, and other team members to gather information and ensure that reports align with project objectives, agency mandates, and client requirements
  • Research: Acquisitioning state-specific information and GIS layers

Minimum qualifications

  • GIS certificate from an accredited college or university, or actively working towards obtaining certification
  • Proficiency in GIS software, such as ArcGIS, QGIS, or other relevant tools, with a preference for ArcGIS software, and a knowledge of geoprocessing tools (union, buffer, etc.)
  • Experience with data entry, shapefile manipulation, and georeferencing
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work accurately and efficiently
  • English language fluency, including proficient writing and reading
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • The ability to communicate with an array of individuals with differing communication styles
  • Critical thinking and creative problem-solving abilities
  • Proficiency in office software and tools, including Microsoft 365 and Adobe
  • Excellent organizational skills and a keen attention to detail

Preferred qualifications

  • Associate's or higher degree in Geography, GIS, Archaeology, or a related field
  • Experience with Trimble GPS or similar hardware
  • Knowledge of archaeological principles and practices, including an understanding of archaeological terminology, field methods, and site documentation
  • Knowledge and/or experience with the Public Land Survey System (PLSS) with the ability to list legal PLSS identifications
  • Knowledge of relevant regulations and guidelines related to GIS data management, privacy, and security, especially in the context of cultural heritage preservation
  • Experience working with and interpreting engineering plat maps

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to remain seated or standing at a desk, working on a computer, for hours at a time with repetitive hand motions
  • Ability to look at a computer monitor for hours at a time
