Compensation — Varies based on education level
Enrolled as a freshman or sophomore in a college or university: $19.57/hour
Enrolled as a junior or senior in a college or university: $21.17/hour
Enrolled in a graduate program: $24.77/hour
Internship Duration
This internship will be up to 400 hours in duration and is performed in person. Applicants must be available to work onsite in Hillsboro, OR.
About this Opportunity
The City of Hillsboro’s Economic and Community Development Department (ECD) is seeking a motivated Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Intern to support a variety of geospatial analysis, mapping, and data management projects. The selected candidate will assist with maintaining and improving GIS data, supporting planning and reporting initiatives, and contributing to projects that help inform community development and decision-making. This role provides valuable exposure to how GIS is applied in a local government setting to support planning, economic development, building, and transportation efforts.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Assist with developing Key Destinations layer for Climate-Friendly Equitable Communities (CFEC) program.
- Assist with Annual Housing Units and Population Survey.
- Assist with inventorying internal data and standardizing symbology across internal layers.
- Updating existing data layers to address minor errors/match recent annexations.
- Assist with implementation of ECD's Data and Reporting Strategy.

- Possess foundational knowledge of GIS concepts and proficiency using ArcGIS Pro.
- Have experience/expertise in data management and best practices concerning the use of GIS data.
Minimum Qualifications
Must be enrolled in an educational institution (secondary or post-secondary) or have graduated within the last 3 months, studying Geography, or closely related field with a focus in GIS. Level of education and experience needed will vary based on assignment requirements.
Preferred Qualifications & Expectations
- Proficiency with ESRI products, particularly ArcGIS Pro.
- At least two semesters of coursework studying GIS concepts and applications.
- Basic computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Willingness to participate in an in-person position.
- Ability to attend City of Hillsboro Human Resources Summer Intern events held in Hillsboro.
- Willingness and ability to meet with staff off-site at public locations (e.g., coffee shops) for occasional one-on-one meetings.
LICENSING/CERTIFICATIONS:
Depending on assignment, some positions may require:
- Possession of a valid State Driver's License and safe driving record.
