General Description and Classification Standards
This is a full-time, entry-level position within the Geographic Information System function of the Department of Watershed Management, City of Atlanta. This technical position works primarily with GIS data to gather, manage, and analyze our infrastructure assets. The GIS Technician, Sr. will perform geoprocessing, analysis, editing, and map production within ESRI software. Once onboarded, this level is expected to continue discovery & education on the department’s specific GIS dataset and the utility infrastructure the department is tasked with supporting.
Supervision Received
Receives general supervision and guidance regarding team objectives, projects, scheduling, tasks, etc. Follows fixed work methods and established standard operating procedures for assignments. May work independently or with other skilled staff. Responsible for completion of specific assigned tasks.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities

- Completes assigned GIS tasks in an accurate and timely manner.
- Follows set procedures to assure database standards, performance and system integrity goals are met.
- Utilizes proper judgement and decision making, knowing when to ask for assistance to resolve an issue.
- Produces GIS materials for managers, clients, and customers.
- Responds to general inquiry questions from peers & interdepartmental staff.
- Performs quality assurance (QA), data analysis and report production.
- Data maintenance across multiple datasets. (Water, sewer, and stormwater)
- Acts with a professional business acumen following organizational policies.
- Follows established work methods, timetables, and performance standards.
- Offers recommendations and suggestions when applicable to strengthen data quality, preserve meta data standards and follow GIS & cartographic schema.
Leadership Provided
Does not supervise others. May work as a mentor to interns.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities This is a partial listing of necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job successfully. It is not an exhaustive list.
- Knowledge of most concepts and methods related to GIS.
- Specialized understanding of ESRI ArcGIS Suite software; Desktop, Online & Pro.
- Interest in expanding skills and adapting to the ever-advancing GIS field with regard to system configurations and updates.
- Ability to conceptualize spatial data and possesses a high attention to detail.
- Solid set of advanced computer and Microsoft Office skills (Word, Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Demonstrates initiative, a cooperative nature, and proper interpersonal skills within the organization.
- Ability to think critically, abstractly and resolve most issues without escalation.
Minimum Qualifications: Education and Experience
- Completion of appropriate technical courses in GIS, Geospatial modeling, CAD.
- 1-3 years of experience with GIS software and concepts.
Preferred Qualifications: Education & Experience
- Associates degree in Geography, computer science, business information systems (equivalent professional experience may be considered for substitution for the required degree on an exception basis).
- Experience with Arcade, VB Script, J-Script & Python.
- 2-4 years of GIS work experience.
Licensures and Certifications
None required.

Required physical, lifting, and sensory capabilities are requirements to perform the job successfully. Typical environmental conditions associated with job. Some field verification work for data collection may be required.
Work Schedule:
This position follows the City’s hybrid work schedule policy as assigned by the Department of Human Resources Commissioner and requires in-person work at City worksites/facilities at least four (4) days per week, with the option to work remotely one (1) day per week, based on eligibility, departmental needs, and supervisor approval. The hybrid work schedule is subject to change at any time to five (5) days in-person work.
