This position develops and/or coordinates work on geographic information systems (GIS) applications. Duties vary depending on assignment and may include performing mapping duties, spatial analysis for the purpose of thematic mapping, data management and problem solving. Data management includes the collection, manipulation, analysis and storage of quantifiable data associated with geographic entities and attributes including maintaining geographic datasets and utilizing geoprocessing tools. Problem solving techniques are used to analyze spatial data and to find answers based on variables in a specific situation. An ability to work with a variety of GIS applications such as ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Pro, ArcOnline, Portal, Operations Dashboard, Collector and ArcSDE. Understanding relational database concepts (GIS and otherwise) is essential and to work with SQL is preferred.


The Planning and Development Senior GIS Technician is responsible for developing, creating, and maintaining GIS databases and layers with respect to planning and permit activities. Job duties include inputting and reviewing GIS data within an enterprise ESRI ArcGIS environment, editing CAD drawings using AutoCAD, creating map layouts and views of high difficulty and complexity, researching and resolving users inquiries, interpreting plans, plats, and legal descriptions, and performing spatial data analysis to meet business needs. The Senior GIS Technician will supply technical support for special planning and development projects that require visual or mapping aids for such project. The Senior GIS Technician will also be involved in writing Python scripts for automation of routine GIS tasks and procedures.

This recruitment and any interview process as a result of this recruitment may be used by multiple hiring managers and multiple departments throughout the City to fill any related current or future vacancies; other recruitments and appropriate eligible lists may also be considered.


$22.81 (minimum) - $34.80 (maximum) hourly / $47,445 - $72,384 annually. Candidates may be hired above the minimum depending upon qualifications.

  • Two years of experience working with geographic information systems and two years of information systems or technology-related education OR;
  • A bachelor's degree in geographic information systems, geography, planning, landscape architecture, civil engineering, computer science, or a closely related field.
  • An equivalent combination of related experience and education may be considered.
  • Working irregular hours, second and/or third shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings may be required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS – The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:


  • Experience using map services, web maps, and web apps.
  • Experience working with a Work Order Management System.
  • Experience creating maps using the ESRI ArcGIS Desktop/Pro program.
  • Experience performing complex spatial analysis within the ArcGIS environment.


  • Experience reading and interpreting property legal descriptions
  • Experience creating maps using the ESRI ArcGIS Desktop program.
  • Experience performing complex spatial analysis within the ArcGIS environment.
  • Experience working with AutoCAD and SQL.
  • Experience working with ArcGIS Online (AGOL)
