Essential Job Duties
This position serves as a unique Geospatial Science Fellowship, appointed between NC State University’s Department of Forestry and Environmental Resource and the USDA Forest Service-Southern Research Station, Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory. The Laboratory is also home to the Coweeta Long-Term Ecological Research site, which is one of the longest continually operated environmental research sites in the U.S, and works cooperatively with several universities, National Forests, and local, state, and other federal agencies. The Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory has been in continuous operation since 1934 and the research program spans the continuum of basic to applied science. The laboratory is located in the scenic Appalachian Mountains, filled with abounding recreational activities including hunting, fishing, camping, whitewater rafting, spelunking, skiing, picturesque views, and access to the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and Shenandoah National Park in northern Virginia.
The incumbent will be located at the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory in Otto, NC, and will participate in a team-oriented project focused on linking water supply from state and private forests to drinking water intakes in the southeastern United States and serve as the primary liaison between the USDA Forest Service and NC State University.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
1) Performing geospatial analysis in a Geographic Information System (GIS) on a variety of vector and raster data;
2) Constructing databases of natural resource information; and
3) Developing products, including geospatial and statistical models, maps, manuscripts, figures, and tables for use in reports, scientific journal articles, and presentations to stakeholders and the scientific community.
Master’s degree or appropriate experience in GIS, remote sensing, hydrology, engineering, environmental science, or related field from and accredited university.
Departmental Required Skills
This position requires:
1) Professional knowledge of the theories, principles, concepts, practices, standards, and methods of geography and natural resources to assume duties related to the analysis of relationships between various natural resources, and apply established geospatial analysis processes, protocols and solutions to support project objectives;
2) Skills sufficient to apply established geospatial technology methods and procedures (including, but not limited to the following; ArcGIS desktop mapping and analysis packages; geospatial database development and management; image processing; remote sensing);
3) Proficiency in programming languages used for data analysis and processing (e.g., Python, Matlab, R, C++, C#, FORTRAN, etc.);
4) Knowledge of cartographic principles and conventions sufficient to create maps for internal and external use displaying natural resource data, highlight particular analysis results, and convey basic geospatial information
