ITD - Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technician

GIS Technician

We are seeking a highly motivated, thorough and disciplined individual with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) knowledge and skills to fill the role of GIS Technician for the Information Technology Department and assist other Public Works Departments. This position will be involved in a wide variety of GIS projects and data/application work, using ESRI and Autodesk products. The working projects for the position may include the following areas of focus: Parcel Fabric software to update county parcel datasets; Data maintenance involving existing GIS datasets, new subdivision plats, deeds, right of way use permits, annexations; design or prepare cartographic representations of GIS Data, including web-based mapping systems for internal/external clients; promote the use of the department’s new web-based mapping system, PimaMaps, which may include training internal/external customers; review existing or incoming data for a accuracy, usefulness, quality, or completeness of documents; assist with customers service requests and disseminate information via web-portal, phone, email or customer service public counter; and management of assigned projects.   • Designs or prepares cartographic representations of GIS data using GIS applications, including web based mapping systems;
  • Maintains or modifies existing GIS data;
  • Enters data into GIS databases, using techniques such as coordinate geometry, keyboard entry of tabular data, manual digitizing of maps, scanning or automatic conversion to features, or converting other sources of digital data;
  • Reviews existing or incoming data for currency, accuracy, usefulness, quality, or completeness of documentation;
  • Interprets aerial or ortho imagery for mapping purposes;
  • Revises existing maps and reports, making all necessary corrections and adjustments;
  • Compiles GIS data required for map preparation, including aerial imagery, survey notes, records, reports, and original maps;
  • Documents GIS procedures, metadata, and operating standards;
  • Provides technical support to users or customers regarding the maintenance, development, or operation of GIS databases, applications and data collection devices;
  • Identifies and compiles GIS data to create maps in response to requests.


Knowledge of:

  • GIS data entry techniques and methodologies;
  • quality Control/Quality Assurance of GIS data and products;
  • GIS data research, collection, organization and documentation for specific product output;
  • current GIS software and procedures;
  • GIS metadata compilation.

Skill in:

  • creating and editing GIS data, including attribute data, using methodologies such as coordinate geometry, heads-up digitizing, and conversion of other data sources;
  • interpreting legal descriptions/legal documents and generating GIS features from them;
  • adjusting GIS layers to, and extracting features from, aerial or ortho imagery;
  • creating and maintaining GIS metadata;
  • presenting and training others;
  • providing customer support in the use of GIS data and applications;
  • time management while handling multiple projects;
  • identifying customer needs and developing solutions to meet their needs.

Minimum Qualifications

(1) An Associate's degree from an accredited college, university or technical school in Geographic Information Systems, remote sensing, cartography, geography or related field as determined by the appointing authority at the time of recruitment.
(2) Two years of technical experience in geographic information systems, which included data creation and analysis, the production of maps, reports and cartographic products.

Preferred Qualifications: (Be specific in describing your experience in your application. Ensure the descriptions provided illustrate your competencies, specifically addressing the required and preferred qualifications.):

  • Experience editing and maintaining GIS base layers, such as parcel boundaries, streets, rights-of-way, easements, etc. using Esri products and/or Autodesk.
  • Experience using relational databases and performing attribute field queries.
  • Experience researching background documentation and/or data, e.g. legal documents, construction plans, databases, etc.
  • Experience interpreting legal descriptions and legal documents (e.g. subdivision plats, deeds) and generating GIS features from them.
  • Experience with data quality review and formulating solutions.
