Geospatial Image Data Specialist opportunity working with JPL's Processing Algorithms and Calibration Engineering team.

The Processing Algorithm & Calibration Engineering (PA&CE) team advances integration and automation of processes associated with the extraction of information from the sensor data, its compilation into 3D spatial databases, and subsequent exploration. It strives for the state of the art capabilities in detection, identification, correlation and extraction of spatial, spectral and temporal characteristics of data in support of in-situ tactical operations and remote sensing mapping.

This position primarily encompasses work in the area of geospatial image processing with applications to Earth science orbiter missions as well as Mars based in-situ science missions. You will work on algorithm specification, design, and implementation for a multi-mission operational image processing data system, primarily in support of autonomous in-flight geometric calibration, co-registration, orthorectification, and mapping of imagery obtained during remote-sensing and/or in-situ operations. The role assumes responsibilities for advanced integration and automation of processes associated with the extraction of information from the sensor data, its compilation into 3D spatial databases, and subsequent exploration, management and archiving. It will help assure the state of the art capabilities in detection, identification, correlation and extraction of spatial and temporal characteristics of data in support of in-situ tactical operations, science, and remote sensing mapping. It will help strengthen and promote partnerships internal to JPL as well as with outside communities in the areas of Remote Sensing, Geomatics, Computer Vision, and Spatial Information.

Qualifications

  • Typically requires a Ph.D in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Geomatics or a Master's in a related technical discipline with a minimum of 1 year of related experience; or a Bachelor's degree with related experience with a minimum of 3 years experience.
  • Advanced knowledge in one or more of the following fields: a) digital photogrammetry, b) image understanding, c) stereo vision, d) data fusion techniques, e) optimization algorithms.
  • Broad knowledge in one or more of the following related fields: numerical analysis, data analysis, mathematical modeling, estimation theory.
  • Excellent communication skills to understand user needs, negotiate requirements, and summarize trade-offs to instrument developers and science customers.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience integrating with existing applications and libraries written in C, C++, and/or Python.
    Significant and varied experience in scientific and numerical programming.
    Broad knowledge and understanding of the principles underlying data acquisition and subsequent processing involving scientific remote sensing instruments.
    Extensive knowledge of applicable industry and/or academic practices and standards for analysis of remote sensing data sets in response to science needs, and reporting of related results in journals, workshops, or conferences.
