GIS Technician

Job Purpose:

The purpose of this position is to collect, attribute, and verify the City’s infrastructure system features to ensure accuracy of geographic information system data.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operates global positioning system in the field to collect data and ensures equipment is operating properly in order to obtain accurate information.
  • Collects attribute data on selected features and ensure data fields are populated with accurate data.
  • Reviews database information, plans, base maps, as-built drawings, and edits made in the field to ensure accuracy and proper documentation.
  • Generates work orders for defects located in the field and determines information and materials required to resolve issues.
  • Assists in review of site plans to ensure compliance with applicable standards.
  • Researches right of way documents for sewer lines and waterlines to determine right of way boundaries and descriptions.
  • Inspects post construction sites with approved plans by spot-checking a representative sample of manholes and valves to ensure data provided has been accurately geo-located.

Licensing and Certifications:

Valid North Carolina Driver’s License;

PLEASE NOTE: Applicants must meet the City criteria for an acceptable driving record.

Supplemental Functions:

Performs other similar duties as required.

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:

  • Positions in this class require: standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, sitting, reaching, handling, kneeling, crawling, pushing/pulling, vision, foot controls, balancing, bending, crouching, hearing, twisting, and talking.
  • Medium Work: Exerting 20 - 50 pounds occasionally, 10-25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly.
  • Incumbents may be subjected to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, and physical hazards.

  • Applicable tools and equipment of the trade;
  • Applicable hardware and software applications;
  • Basic hydrology principles;
  • Surveying principles;
  • Applicable collection systems;
  • Safe work methods.
  • Operating a computer and applicable software applications;
  • Conducting research;
  • Operating applicable tools and equipment of the trade;
  • Collecting and interpreting data;
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

Required Experience
High school diploma or equivalency and at least six-months to one year of advanced study, with at least one (1) year experience; or the City may consider an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
