The essential function of the position within the organization is to build, maintain, modify and use geographic information systems (GIS) databases in the review and development of City infrastructure.

Examples of Duties

PRIMARY DUTIES: This list represents the essential tasks performed by the position. Employees may be assigned additional duties by management as required.

  • Designs or prepares graphic representations of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data, using GIS hardware or software applications including Vector and Raster imaging data
  • Analyzes Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data to identify spatial relationships or display results of analyses, using maps, graphs, or tabular data.
  • Creates, maintains, or modifies existing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) databases collected from various departments within city government, private engineering firms, and other government agencies.
  • Enters data into Geographic Information Systems (GIS) databases, using techniques such as coordinate geometry, keyboard entry of tabular data, manual digitizing of maps, scanning or automatic conversion to vectors, or conversion of other sources of digital data.
  • Reviews existing or incoming data for currency, accuracy, usefulness, quality, or completeness of documentation.
  • Conducts geospatial data building, modeling, or analysis, using advanced spatial analysis, data manipulation, or cartography software.
  • Administers network securities and privileges to City personnel for GIS mapping.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: Education requirements refers to job specific training and education required for entry into the position.

The GIS Technician must have considerable technical Knowledge, including an advanced understanding of GIS and Database related analysis involving municipal utility infrastructures and distribution systems; computer aided design and drafting; knowledgeable of the principles of GIS applications, municipal mapping, environmental conditions mapping, and engineering and planning projects; digitizing within a CAD/GIS software program from a paper medium to a digital vector format or heads up display digitizing within CAD/GIS software program from a digital Raster Medium. Must have advanced knowledge of experience working with Raster based digital images within a GIS environment integrated with a CAD Vector based software. Skills: Image Display, enhancement, and manipulation skills are required.

Requires an Associate’s Degree or specialized courses/training equivalent to satisfactory completion of two years of college in CAD design, GIS Mapping or closely related field.


  • Experience refers to the amount of work experience that is required for entry into the position that would result in reasonable expectation that the person can perform the tasks required by the position.
  • Requires one year experience in GIS mapping, infrastructure mapping or closely related experience.
  • Must have strong independent problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Must have strong computer and technical skills.
    Must pass a pre-employment background check, drug screening, and possess a valid drivers license.
