GIS Technician

Utility Safety and Design, Inc. (USDI – provides professional engineering and design,
consultation, construction, and operational services for owners and operators of natural gas facilities,
including transmission operators, municipalities, master meter operators, and local distribution

systems across the Midwest – some with a single service, others as professional engineers, and still others as operator of record. USDI provides full-spectrum natural gas solutions through 1) up-front consultation, 2) strategic engineering and design, 3) affordable construction services, and 4) total operational support.


USDI is seeking two (2) Natural Gas GIS Technicians to perform activities related to the implementation of customized GIS solutions for natural gas operators. The job will encompass various aspects GIS, GPS, data collection, app development, and field utilization for natural gas compliance activities. Work is typically performed inside as well as outside, and must conform to the strict requirements of state and pipeline safety regulations as well as company policies and procedures. The individual will be responsible for tasks including, but not limited to:

• Provide technical expertise and end-user support related to GIS & natural gas asset management
• Development and update of custom natural gas compliance applications (apps)
• Collection and conversion of mapping resources and data
• Collection of data in the field utilizing GPS
• Compiling and organizing GIS data from maps, databases, and other sources
• On-going spatial data maintenance and dissemination
• Generation of maps and other GIS reports
• Creation of maps and as-built drawings using AutoCAD and/or ESRI software
• Ensure that quality assurance on new or revised data conforms to standards and company policy
• Conversion, import, and export data in and out of the GIS system
• Direct the preparation of regular status reports, highlighting GIS issues requiring attention
• Create and document processes and procedures


• High School Diploma or Equivalent
• Experience with various GIS and CAD software, such as ESRI and AutoCAD
• Experience in developing and maintaining GIS data and other GIS output products including use
of ESRI software and Global Positioning System (GPS) units for data collection
• Experience and knowledge with GIS databases and editing using ESRI ArcGIS software
• Thorough knowledge of AutoCAD as related to infrastructure mapping and management
• Experience with natural gas industry a plus
• Able to work independently and within a crew setting
• Able to work with minimal supervision or assistance from others
• Possess strong written and verbal communication skills
• Physically prepared for hands on job tasks in all types of weather conditions
• Able to pass initial and continuous federally required Operator Qualification evaluations
• Willingness to travel, including overnight stays
• Maintain a positive work atmosphere through effective interactions and communications with coworkers, management, and clients
• Maintain a safe environment for co-workers, clients, and the public through adherence to established safety standards and timely reporting of potential hazards
• Must possess a valid driver’s license and a good driving record
• Able to pass a background and driving check, employment history, and drug screening
