GIS Supervisor

Oversees Geographic Information Systems (GIS) staff, project teams, and analysis in support of delivering enterprise GIS data and digital GIS solutions to Houston Public Works with focus on the water distribution and wastewater collection systems.


  • Provides daily supervision, coordination, and mentorship of GIS personnel.
  • Provides support on GIS projects, programs, including overseeing analysis and data engineering.
  • Establishes project goals, guides staff in successful execution including project planning, task planning, quality control, and mentoring.
  • Utilizes advanced technical knowledge to deliver analyses, enterprise data, GIS digital solutions such as web maps, dashboard, field applications, and publishing data services.
  • Senior level data engineering which includes all elements of data development, design, and maintenance.
  • Consults with internal and external stakeholders to identify needs and facilitates data sharing and/or data acquisition.
  • Supervises daily team's progress to ensure deadlines are met in a timely manner. Exhibits strong project management skills and experience.
  • Provides technical guidance and knowledge on GIS technology or related geospatial topics to the team and Houston Public Works.
  • Performs advanced and complex data analysis.

Work is substantially complex and varied. Requires the interpretation of technical and detailed guidelines, policies, procedures in combination. Analytic ability is needed to gather and interpret data requiring careful analysis. Errors in work could lead to significant expense and inconvenience. The incumbent generally receives general direction, working from broad goals and policies only. The individual may participate heavily in setting their own work objectives. All duties are responsibilities may not be included in the above job description.

The position requires stooping, bending, and/or lifting of items of up to 30 pounds and occasional periods of walking on rough surfaces.

Requires a Bachelor's degree in Geographic Information Science, Planning, Geography, Computer Science or a closely related field.


Four years of professional experience working with a comprehensive geographic information system are required.

Professional experience working with a comprehensive geographic information system may be substituted for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis.


Preference shall be give to certified GIS professionals (GISP

**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**

However, the Department may administer a skill assessment evaluation.

If yes, this position is subject to random drug testing and if a promotional position, candidate must pass an assignment drug test.

Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification. The salary grade for this position is:
