GIS Specialist

GIS Coordinator

Under the supervision of a Team Leader, the GIS Specialist supports effective and efficient program and project delivery by performing basic to complex analysis of specified data, authorizing and maintaining datasets, upholding best practices, utilizing appropriate methods in conversion and validation of data received in various formats, producing maps, illustration boards, exhibits, etc., on demand in a timely manner meeting departmental standards.

GIS Specialist duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Accesses maintains, and supplements existing GIS databases.
  • Operates G.I.S. Workstation and Software for Research and Development of G.I.S. projects.
  • Operates G.I.S. Workstation and Software for Acquisition and Compilation of G.I.S. project data.
  • Operates G.I.S. Workstation and Software for Printing/Plotting and distribution of G.I.S. data including Hardcopy and Digital Maps, Charts, Graphs and Reports as needed.
  • Provides Analysis of G.I.S. data.
  • Advocates GIS inside and outside the organization through various channels including participation in organizational and regional committees, providing training and holding in-house seminars.
  • Management and Maintenance of G.I.S. layers and geospatial database(s) utilizing CAD Software for the production of G.I.S. projects as needed. Aids in the integration of legacy data systems.
  • Interfaces with various internal and external agencies during the process of accomplishing the basic G.I.S. functions, in an efficient and professional manner.
  • Applies best practices to data creation and implementation which will emphasize accurate data set attributes and spatial integrity.

Requirements

High School diploma and
A minimum of nine (9) years GIS Analyst experience utilizing the more advanced principles and practices of GIS is required.
OR
Associates degree in GIS, Geography, Civil Engineering, Urban Planning, Information Systems or a field requiring GIS coursework and
A minimum of seven (7) years GIS Analyst experience utilizing the more advanced principles and practices of GIS is required.
OR
A BA/BS degree or higher in GIS, Geography, Civil Engineering, Urban Planning, Information Systems or a field requiring GIS coursework and
A minimum of five (5) years GIS Analyst experience utilizing the more advanced principles and practices of GIS is required.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must have extensive knowledge of Geographic Information Systems and Geodatabase concepts.
  • Considerable knowledge and experience with the core ESRI GIS software products, specifically ArcGIS Desktop - Advance, ArcSDE, and relational databases within MS SQL Server.
  • Knowledge of multi-faceted disciplines which contribute to the implementation of the GIS application including but not limited to ArcGIS Online, ArcCatalog, and various ArcGIS tools and tasks including Georeferencing and Geocoding.
  • Knowledge of Structured Query Language (SQL) scripting language to retrieve data from relational database management systems in MS SQL Server.
  • Familiarity with Python and JavaScript.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Possess strong analytical skills and be highly detail-oriented.

Ability to:
Communicate effectively, either verbally or in writing, with technical and nontechnical professionals.
Work efficiently on a team understanding the collective goal with a willingness to perform tasks below experience level and learn or attempt new skills if necessary.
Work independently to meet the needs of special projects.

Experience with computer equipment, engineering, drawing, computer-aided design/drafting or database administration including data manipulation, data management, and data maintenance
