GIS Analyst

JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision of the GIS Programming Manager, maintain geo-databases, provide
decision support analysis to departments, create moderately complex mapping products and
provide education to other members of the team and other departments. Create new G.I.S. layers,
edit existing layers, conduct field/document research, and respond to analytical G.I.S. requests.
Perform other related work as required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Maintain G.I.S. geo-databases. Build moderately complex mapping products and provide
ongoing review and editing of currently deployed products. Use complex decision support tools,
such as Routesmart, to provide analysis of advanced GIS problem sets. Support G.I.S.
applications for general use by city staff. Provide GIS assistance to other team members as
needed. Train other employees in the use of G.I.S. software. Provide technical support to city
G.I.S. users. Analyze and perform quality checks on all G.I.S. data. Perform G.I.S. analysis.
Digitize, edit, and maintain geographic map layers. Conduct field/plat research to resolve data
discrepancies. Digitize base maps. Plot maps. Read instruction manuals, program listings,
computer printouts, maps, and other documents. Plan and organize daily activities effectively.
Work independently. Maintain computer-based data and records. Communicate courteously and
effectively in the English language, with other City employees, the public, elected and appointed
officials, and technical personnel. Lift and carry up to 20 pounds of paper and/or equipment for
operation of plotter, and manipulating manuscript maps. Sit for long periods of time. Drive to
various meetings in the North Texas area.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
Keep assigned work area in safe condition. Assist with special projects as needed.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, DEGREES, CERTIFICATES, AND/OR LICENSES:
Bachelors degree required in Geography, Computer Science, or related technical field. G.I.S.
Certificate preferred.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS:
One year of experience (salaried position or internships) required involving G.I.S. related
activities. Must have working knowledge of: statistical and geographic analytical techniques,
ArcGIS, SDE, ArcInfo, ArcView, and Microsoft Office Products. Knowledge of Routesmart and
GeoComm software preferred. Effective oral and written communication skills required. Must
have working knowledge of and skills using: work stations, servers, relational databases, and
networks. Must be able to effectively relate technical information to lay persons. General
understanding required of urban planning and public works issues..
