Overview

The Built Environment Characterization Group within the Human Dynamics Section is currently seeking qualified applicants for a technical professional. In this role, you will work with a team of talented researchers, engineers, and technologists to develop the next-generation technological solutions to enable true impact on critical national security missions through a team-based approach and commitment to excellence. You will work within the Human Dynamics Section at ORNL, where you will have the opportunity to support a broad range of R&D projects in the development of data, models, methods, and computational approaches utilizing Earth observation, measurement, statistics, surveys and digital traces to provide insights into human activities and interactions with the environment, from local to global scales. As a member of the Built Environment Characterization Group, you will augment our expertise in discovering the functional and complex connections between humans and their physical, cultural, and socioeconomic landscapes.

The successful candidate will work on challenging, multidisciplinary projects that advance our understanding of human processes as they interact with the virtual, natural, and built environment. Solving problems motivated by national security challenges, you will have the opportunity to expand your skills, publish your findings, and leverage the expertise of a wide network of scientists. This position focuses on critical infrastructure data development research; specifically, to create highly accurate, geospatial data from open sources for emergency response and preparedness, population modelling and risk and resiliency modelling.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the design, development, and implementation of new tools, methods, and algorithms that improve our ability to collect source data from publicly available websites.
  • Provide support for the development of new Critical Infrastructure datasets and evaluate them for quality and spatial accuracy and apply them to scientific output.
  • Perform spatial verification and develop validation tools and methods to include implementation of spatial statistical analysis on large spatial datasets.
  • Automate work tasks to include authoring, managing, and maintaining metadata in a variety of accepted standard formats.
  • Build, review, and package final datasets into a schema prescribed by sponsor.

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in geography, geographic information science, remote sensing, image science, environmental engineering, natural sciences, or related field with at least 2 years of work experience in the following areas:
  • Proven experience with GIS principles and analytical techniques, GIS science theory, application, and computational methods. Also requires broad skills in the analysis, visualization, and interpretation of various scientific and geospatial data.
  • Proven experience in quality control and quality assurance of large authoritative spatial datasets.
  • Proven experience of creating geospatial sampling datasets for training and testing deep learning models at scale.
  • Proven experience in working in large teams on collaborative projects.
  • Proficient knowledge of GIS software like ArcMap, QGIS, and PostGIS
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of Python, R, or JavaScript
  • Experience with data parsing, data wrangling, and geocoding
  • Experience with database design, development, and management of thematic spatial datasets.
  • Familiarity with satellite data products, sensors, and imagery formats.
  • Experience with the planning, coordinating, analysis, design, construction, and implementation of new functionality and modifications to various databases to enhance and support business processes and meet information needs.
