What you will be doing:
The Department of Health and Social Services, Division of Public Health is looking to recruit a highly motivated, goal-oriented individual. The work performed by this position is important and at times challenging. We are seeking applicants who demonstrate a high level of initiative, have excellent interpersonal skills, and those who enjoy a dynamic, changing work environment.

  • The incumbent works in the admin unit for multiple sections within Public Health. We are currently supporting the COVID-19 response. The person will:
  • Create dashboards and utilize Python scripting in ArcGIS Esri software, specifically Esri Online, and work with COVID Data Dissemination team to improve data upload and data dissemination efforts.
  • Analyze and present spatial data through Esri software, including designing digital maps with geographic data using population data sets.
  • Provides technical assistance in the application of GIS technology to create graphics and participate in surveillance activities important to public health practice, which includes analytic research and interpretation of information.
  • Participates in daily team meeting and in surveillance, investigation, and analysis of this major public health issue with the COVID Data Dissemination team members.
  • Participate in the daily update of the COVID-19 Data Response Hub, which periodically includes weekend updates and support for the data hub

The position is located in the heart of Anchorage. The office is situated with views of the Chugach Range, Mt. Denali (sans clouds), and the Cook Inlet. There is ample covered parking and a high level of building security, coffee stand, ample vending machines for drinks/snacks, and a café.

Minimum Qualifications
One year of professional experience equivalent to GIS Analyst II with the State of Alaska.


A master's degree from an accredited college that includes either a GIS related concentration or a GIS certificate.

Copies of transcripts are required to verify educational credentials being used to meet the minimum qualifications for a position and are required with each application. Transcripts can be attached at the time of application, provided at the time of interview or if not provided, transcripts will be required prior to appointment.

Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the above requirements, if applicable. If utilizing this education you must show that the education credentials have been submitted to a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign educational credentials and that such education has been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs; or an accredited U.S. state university reports the other institution as one whose transcript is given full value, or full value is given in subject areas applicable to the curricula at the state university. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying. Omission of required documentation listed will result in an incomplete application and you will not receive further consideration.
