General Summary
The person in this position prepares drawings for engineering, commercial, and office projects. Utilizes computer-aided design (CAD) software to prepare layouts and detail drawings. Utilizes Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software to prepare GIS files and maps. Utilizes Facilities Management software to prepare as-built drawings and files for use in ongoing OSP operations. Prepares working plans and complete drawings, working from rough and detailed sketches. Develops and maintains a filing system for copies of engineering drawings and related materials.

Essential Job Functions

  • The person in this position prepares drawings and layouts for engineering, commercial, and office project using CAD software.
  • The person in this position prepares detailed construction sheets, maps, and other related specification sheets for use in the planning, construction and/or installation of telecommunications equipment.
  • The person in this position prepares as-built drawings and files for use in ongoing OSP operations.
  • The person in this position drafts equipment wiring diagrams, schematics, and other equipment layout designs as requested.
  • Ensures drawings, maps, and work plans are accessible by maintaining engineering drawings and related materials in a file system under instructions from GIS/CAD Technician 3 or GIS/CAD Team Leader.
  • CAD/GIS Technician 3 – develops and utilizes a file system for maintaining engineering drawings and related materials.
  • The person in this position creates staking sheets during pre-construction design activities.
  • The person in this position must have the ability to travel as needed to assigned locations.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned by management.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of CAD principles and practices.
  • CAD/GIS Technician 2 and 3 - knowledge of GIS principles and practices.
  • CAD/GIS Technician 2 and 3 - knowledge of RUS and industry regulations affecting engineering projects.
  • Knowledge of construction practices, specifically Rural Utilities Services (RUS) practices.
  • The person in this position must know about company products and services.
  • The person in this position must know about company policies and procedures.
  • Skill in operating various office equipment such as personal computer and telephone systems.
  • The person in this position must be skilled in operating various office equipment such as a personal computer, various software programs, and telephone systems.
  • Microsoft Office Suite – Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Visio
  • Microsoft Outlook
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • The person in this position must be skilled in reading and interpreting technical documents and forms, including work orders, staking sheets, schematics, and circuit diagrams.
  • The person in this position must have the ability to communicate with customers, co-workers, and various business contacts professionally and courteously.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple work assignments.
  • The person in this position must have the ability to pay close attention to detail.

Ability to utilized GIS, CAD, and Facilities Management software. Sample software (not limited to) includes:

  • AutoCAD – CAD/GIS Technician I, II and III
  • ESRI – CAD/GIS Technician II and III
  • Innovative Systems eLation - CAD/GIS Technician II and III
  • Ability to work independently.
  • The person in this position must have the ability to make sound decisions using the information at hand.
  • The person in this position must have the ability to function as a team player effectively.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license, automobile insurance and reliable vehicle.

Education and Experience
CAD/GIS I - Associate’s degree in engineering or equivalent plus 0-2 years of drafting experience.

CAD/GIS II - Associate’s degree in engineering or equivalent plus 2-5 years of CAD/GIS experience.

CAD/GIS III - Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Bachelor’s degree in GIS, or equivalent plus 5+ years of CAD/GIS experience.
