Summer Internship - GIS

GIS Internship

POSITION PURPOSE: Beaufort County School District is looking for a qualified intern to join our team. We provide an internship program that allows individuals to learn the fundamentals of business. The internship program involves training in the areas of leadership, team and business development, human resources and business administration. The student filling this position will handle a wide range of important duties.


  • Provide support in the maintenance of an existing Geodatabase for facilities management
  • Gather raw data for entry into existing map layers
  • Create and add new map layers to an existing geodatabase
  • Gather map feature attribute data and enter into existing data tables and layers
  • Perform digital data conversions (CADD to ArcGIS, MapInfo to ArcGIS, etc.)
  • Works with limited direction or supervision.
  • Resolves problems by identifying and selecting solutions and applying technical experience and precedents.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES: Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal, Chief Officer, Superintendent or other district office administrator as designated by the Superintendent.


High School Diploma, plus 60 college credit hours from an accredited college or university.
Classes towards degree in Geography, Computer Science, Civil Engineering, Urban Planning, Environmental Science, or Homeland Security Management preferred.
Strong organizational skills, including attention to detail.
Experience with facilities management a plus.

This position requires skills in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Cartography. Experience using ESRI ArcGIS, enterprise Geodatabases, CADD, MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, etc.) is desirable. Applicant must have a valid driver’s license and be able to provide own transportation to the District Office in Beaufort, as well as to various school locations when needed. Applicant must be available 25 hours a week with flexible work times.

EXPERIENCE: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have the ability to use the Internet for research applications. Must possess working knowledge of common office equipment, such as fax, copier, calculator, etc.
