Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC), a nonprofit organization with more than 160,000 members and supporters, is the nation's largest trails organization dedicated to connecting people and communities by creating a nationwide network of public trails, many from former rail lines and connecting corridors. Founded in 1986, RTC’s national office is located in Washington, D.C., with regional offices in California, Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
This internship position is located in our national office in downtown Washington, D.C., and is easily accessible from Metro’s red, orange, silver and blue lines.
The GIS Intern is responsible for supporting the efforts of RTC’s GIS Analyst within the trail development team.
Specific responsibilities include the following:
Qualified candidates are undergraduate seniors or master’s degree candidates seeking on the job GIS experience. Ideal candidates will also have class coursework using GIS and a working knowledge of the ArcGIS product family, especially Network Analyst. RTC operates via a PC/Microsoft Office platform, and experience in Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook is expected. Applicants should have strong research abilities, and should possess a strong ability to adapt and be flexible. Applicants should also possess a keen attention to detail and resourcefulness, as well as an obvious willingness to learn.
Internships are unpaid; however, interns using public transportation to and from the national office are eligible for travel reimbursement costs. The office is accessible by the metro’s red, orange, and blue lines and nearly equal distance between the Foggy Bottom and DuPont Circle metro stations. Interns can expect to work in a causal and sociable work environment, while maintaining a professional office atmosphere. Interns will also have the opportunity to network with other interns and staff members working in different departments.
