Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technician

GIS Technician

Under close supervision, performs a variety of office and/or field work in the input and retrieval of Geographic Information System (GIS) layers and tables; performs all tasks related to the collection of and migration to a digital format; and performs other work as required.

Representative Duties:
The following typical tasks and responsibilities are representative of this class. They are descriptive, not limiting: Assists in the entry of information into specific layers of the City's GIS system; performs document research in preparation for data entry using Coordinate Geometry (COGO); enters data through the use of COGO, digitizing or other data conversion methods; enters attribute data using database tools; assists users with the use of GIS products, GPS equipment, large format printers and scanners; and performs basic preventative maintenance on GPS equipment including cleaning and recalibration.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applications will be accepted only for those applicants who clearly demonstrate on the COMPLETED application, supplemental questionnaire, and resume that they possess the minimum qualifications which include:
  • One (1) year of course work in Computer Science, Geographic Information Systems, Geography, or related field OR;
  • One (1) year recent experience working with a variety of GIS applications, preferably in local (municipal) government, OR;
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the capabilities to perform the described duties.
  • Must be able to pass a police background check.

Possession of a valid California Class "C" Driver's License. Applicant must submit a current DMV printout from the Department of Motor Vehicles no older than 2 months of the filing deadline (not dated before 8/20/17) with the application by the filing deadline in order for the application to be accepted. On-line DMV printouts are acceptable as long as they come from the official DMV website.

Highly Desirable Qualifications: Experience with ESRI products, including ArcGIS and ArcGIS Online; Knowledge of editing in an enterprise database environment; Knowledge of Parcel, Land use, and Municipal data preferred.


Knowledge of: GIS products, techniques, procedures and concepts; at least one of the following GIS programs: Arc/INFO, ArcView, Intergraph, GeoMedia, or MapInfo; Windows operating system; and COGO and/or AutoCAD desirable.

Ability to: Read and interpret planning, engineering and building maps and documents; carry out tasks with careful attention to detail; develop and maintain effective working relationships with GIS users in other departments and agencies; and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Physical or Special Working Conditions: Standard office environment and working conditions.
