Aerosol Modeling and Remote Sensing Scientist

Omaha,  Nebraska
Remote Sensing

Atmospheric and Environmental Research, Inc. (AER) invites applications for a Senior Staff Scientist position to be filled in the spring of 2017 at our Omaha, NE office located on Offutt AFB. The selected candidate is expected to lead science development for the Air Force’s Point Analysis Intelligence System (PAIS). This system extracts current and historic weather data from a variety of sources and presents it as a vertical or slant-range profile to users on demand. The science lead will determine the suitability of new meteorological models and other datasets for incorporation into PAIS, assess the quality of the data used, modify and improve the retrieval and processing of the data for the profile representation, and develop new statistical parameters to represent the accuracy of the data in the profile. A key upgrade in the coming years will be the incorporation of an aerosol model for the system, along with remote sensing data assimilation for the model selected. The candidate will serve as the science lead for a team of software engineers responsible for software implementation, and will work with a mixed team of other contractors, Government civilian, and military staff.

In addition to the PAIS project, the candidate will also have the opportunity to work with other scientists at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and elsewhere in AER’s offices on additional projects related to aerosol and air pollution modeling and observation.

Early and mid-career candidates are encouraged to apply. A PhD in atmospheric sciences, or a MS in atmospheric sciences with extensive related experience, is required.

Additional requirements:

  • US citizen able to obtain a DoD Top Secret clearance
  • Background in aerosol modeling and/or remote sensing
  • Able to independently conduct data analysis and validation projects
  • Able to summarize project results into technical reports and present briefings

Desired qualifications:

  • Software writing experience (Java a plus)
  • Experience with Department of Defense meteorological support
  • Familiarity with numerical weather prediction models
  • Current Top Secret clearance
  • Occasional travel will be required, including some outside the US.
